Professor Gerry McKenna chairs Servite Priory Library Project
Professor P G (Gerry) McKenna chairs the Management Board of the Servite Priory Library Project. The Project, based at Benburb Co. Tyrone, is designed to catalogue, conserve and consolidate the Servite Priory’s library collections. The collections extend to approximately 20,000 volumes with some books dating back to the 16th Century. They include extremely valuable Servite archives and unique (within Ireland and Great Britain) Servite and Marian library collections. The Board is seeking to raise the necessary funding to develop and house the library in a single secure and environmentally controlled location such that is accessible to researchers and the public. It is envisaged that it will be not only a focus for scholarly activity but also for schools and various local groupings. It will add greatly to the heritage collections of the surrounding area.
(Note: Gerry McKenna was responsible, as Vice Chancellor, for the agreement signed in 2004 to conserve and transfer the Church of Ireland Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Library Collection to the new Library based at the University of Ulster´s Magee campus).
